Leukocytes
Okay, I admit, this actually falls under the blood category, but there's a decent amount of information to know on leukocytes, so they get to have their own page!
- There are 5 kinds of leukocytes (WBCs)-neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.
Type of Leukocyte |

Neutrophils-
- 60-70% of all WBCs.
- 10-12 um in diameter
- Nucleus has 2-5 lobes
- Cytoplasm has fine, lilac granules.
- Function: Phagocytosis

Eosinophils-
- 2-4% of all WBCs
- 10-12 um in diameter
- Nucleus has 2-3 lobes
- Large, red-orange granules in the cytoplasm.
- Function: Combats allergic reactions, phagocytizes antigen-antibody complexes, and destroys some parasitic worms.

Basophils-
- 0.5-1.0% of all WBCs
- 8-10 um in diameter
- Nucleus has 2 lobes
- Large, blue-purple granules in the cytoplasm.
- Function: Liberates heparin, histamine, and serotonin in allergic reactions that intensity the overall inflammatory response.

Lymphocytes-
- 20-25% of all WBCs
- May be 6-14 um in diameter.
- Nucleus is round or slightly indented.
- Cytoplasm forms a rim around the nucleus that looks sky blue.
- Functions: B-cells secrete antibodies, T-cells attack invading viruses, and natural killer cells attack infectious microbes and tumor cells.

|
Monocytes-
- 3-8% of all WBCs
- 12-20 um diameter
- Nucleus is kidney or horseshoe shaped.
- Cytoplasm is blue-gray with foamy appearance.
- Function: Phagocytosis, after transforming into fixed or wandering macrophages.
