Urinary System

Function: the urinary system filters blood, creates, stores, and excretes urine from the body.

Components & Functions:

Kidneys

  • Filter blood.
  • Helps maintain water, solute, and pH in blood.
  • Helps regulate (decrease) B/P via Renin release.
  • Secretes Erythropoeitin, which stimulates erythrocyte (RBC) production.
  • Secretes Calcitrol, which activates Vitamin D.

Ureters

  • Carry urine to the bladder.

Bladder

  • Stores urine-approx. 0.5-1.0 L.

Urethra

  • In females-an opening to secrete urine.
  • In males-an opening to secrete urine and semen.
