Skeletal System
- The skeletal system is made up of all the bones in our body, about 206 of them!
Functions of the Skeletal System:
- Support
- Movement
- Mineral and fat storage.
- Protection
- Hematopoeisis
There are four main bone types:
- Long bones- i.e. femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, ulna, and phalanges.
- Short bones- i.e. wrist bones (carpals), and ankle bones (tarsals).
- Flat bones- i.e. cranial bones, ribs, sternum, and scapula.
- Irregular bones- i.e. vertebrae and facial bones.
There are also two bone textures: compact and spongy.
Bone Formation = Ossification.
- Invasion of the periosteum by a vascular bud at the primary ossification site.
- Formation of the diaphyseal collar.
- Cavitation of the marrow cavity.
- Osteoblast/Osteoclast progression.
- Secondary ossification sites.
- Formation of the epiphyseal plate/line.
