Skeletal System

  • The skeletal system is made up of all the bones in our body, about 206 of them!

Functions of the Skeletal System:

  1. Support
  2. Movement
  3. Mineral and fat storage.
  4. Protection
  5. Hematopoeisis

There are four main bone types:

  1. Long bones- i.e. femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, ulna, and phalanges.
  2. Short bones- i.e. wrist bones (carpals), and ankle bones (tarsals).
  3. Flat bones- i.e. cranial bones, ribs, sternum, and scapula.
  4. Irregular bones- i.e. vertebrae and facial bones.

There are also two bone textures: compact and spongy.

Bone Formation = Ossification.

  1. Invasion of the periosteum by a vascular bud at the primary ossification site.
  2. Formation of the diaphyseal collar.
  3. Cavitation of the marrow cavity.
  4. Osteoblast/Osteoclast progression.
  5. Secondary ossification sites.
  6. Formation of the epiphyseal plate/line.
